Greylisting

Greylisting is an anti-spam technique in which a receiving server temporarily rejects (4xx) mail from an unfamiliar sender, accepting it only when the sender retries, which legitimate MTAs do and naive spam cannons historically didn't. For senders, greylisting is a routine source of first-contact deferrals.
